Abdulwahab Darawshe
January 1, 1944 - March 11, 2026 (Age 82)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Abdulwahab. He left us peacefully on March 11th, 2026, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, conviction, and a whole lot of laughter. Born on January 1st, 1944, Abdulwahab was a force of nature – a man who always had a twinkle in his eye and a story to tell. I’ll never forget the time he tried to teach me to play backgammon, a game he was utterly obsessed with. He’d get so animated, gesturing wildly and muttering in Arabic, even when he was winning! It was pure joy to be around him, a constant reminder to find humor and connection in everything.
Abdulwahab was, of course, known to many as a dedicated politician, serving as a Member of the Knesset from 1984 to 1999. He fought tirelessly for equality and representation for the Arab community in Israel, a passion rooted in his deep love for his people and his unwavering belief in justice. But to his family, he was simply “Baba” – a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Fatima, a loving father to his children, and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren. He cherished family gatherings, the aroma of Fatima’s incredible cooking filling the house, and the sound of his grandchildren’s laughter echoing through the rooms. He was the anchor of our family, always offering a listening ear, wise counsel, and a warm embrace.
Beyond politics and family, Abdulwahab found immense pleasure in the simple things. He loved tending to his garden, cultivating vibrant flowers and fragrant herbs. He was a passionate reader, devouring books on history, philosophy, and poetry. And he always, *always* had a cup of strong, sweet Arabic coffee brewing, ready to share with anyone who stopped by. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, treating everyone with respect and genuine curiosity. He made you feel seen, heard, and valued.
Abdulwahab’s impact on those who knew him was profound. He inspired us to be better, to fight for what’s right, and to cherish the bonds of family and friendship. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Fatima, his children, grandchildren, and countless friends and colleagues. Though he’s no longer with us in person, his spirit, his warmth, and his unwavering commitment to a more just and equitable world will live on in our hearts forever. May his memory be a blessing.
