It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Adrienne Lee Staples, born December 5, 1956, and peacefully departed this life on April 21, 2026. Adrienne, as so many of us knew her, was a remarkable woman – a true force of nature, and a beloved presence in so many lives. She lived a life brimming with passion, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to making the world a little brighter, one thoughtful action at a time. I have the fondest memory of Adrienne, as a young girl, patiently teaching me how to knit – a skill I still haven't quite mastered, but the patience she showed was truly inspiring. It was clear from the start that she possessed a gentle spirit and a generous heart. Adrienne’s commitment to her community was legendary. Her years as Mayor of South Wairarapa and her service on the Greater Wellington Regional Council were more than just professional endeavors; they were a reflection of her deep love for the place she called home. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, to advocate for what she believed in, and to listen with an open heart. I’ll always remember her calm, steady presence during challenging times, her ability to find common ground, and her genuine concern for the well-being of everyone. Beyond politics, Adrienne found joy in the simple things: a good book, a long walk in the hills, and the company of friends and family. She had a wicked sense of humor and a laugh that could fill a room. Her impact resonated far beyond the political sphere. She fostered connections, built bridges, and inspired countless people to get involved and make a difference. The award of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government is a testament to her dedication to promoting understanding and friendship between New Zealand and Japan – a legacy she worked tirelessly to build. Adrienne was a devoted daughter, sister, and friend. She cherished her family and always made time for those she loved. Her warmth, her wisdom, and her unwavering belief in the goodness of people will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Adrienne is survived by her loving family and a community forever grateful for her service and spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, integrity, and a profound belief in the power of community. While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the incredible life she lived and the countless lives she touched. Rest in peace, dear Adrienne. You will be forever in our hearts.
