Alex Ligertwood
January 1, 1947 - May 4, 2026 (Age 79)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Alex Ligertwood. Born on January 1st, 1947, he left us far too soon on May 4th, 2026, leaving a hole in our hearts that will be impossible to fill. Most people knew Alex as the incredible voice behind Santana, a career that took him around the world and introduced his soulful sound to millions. But to us, he was simply Alex – a warm, funny, endlessly curious man with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a laugh that could fill a room. I remember once, we were camping in the Highlands, and a sudden downpour soaked everything. Instead of complaining, Alex just started drumming on a cooking pot, improvising a rhythm to the rain, and we all ended up laughing until our sides hurt. That was Alex – always finding the joy, even in the unexpected.
Family was everything to Alex. He adored his children and grandchildren, showering them with love, silly jokes, and a genuine interest in their lives. He was a devoted partner, a loyal brother, and a friend who would drop everything to lend a hand. He cherished our Sunday dinners, always arriving with a new story to tell, usually involving a hilarious mishap from his travels or a fascinating encounter with someone he’d met. He had a knack for making everyone feel seen and valued, and his home was always open to anyone who needed a warm meal or a listening ear. He was fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage, and loved sharing stories of his childhood and the music that shaped him.
Music, of course, was woven into the very fabric of Alex’s being. Beyond his time with Santana, he was a gifted guitarist and drummer, always experimenting with new sounds and rhythms. He loved jamming with friends, and his passion for music was infectious. But it wasn’t just about the performance; it was about the connection, the feeling, the way music could transcend language and bring people together. He found so much joy in sharing that gift with the world, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on through his recordings and the memories of those who were lucky enough to hear him play.
Alex touched so many lives with his kindness, his humor, and his unwavering spirit. He taught us to embrace life’s adventures, to find joy in the simple things, and to never stop learning. We’ll miss his stories, his laughter, his hugs, and the way he made every moment feel a little bit brighter. He may be gone, but the music, the memories, and the love he shared will stay with us forever. Rest peacefully, our dear Alex.
