Alexander Butterfield

January 1, 1927 - March 11, 2026 (Age 99)

It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Alex. April 6th, 1926, brought a quiet, thoughtful soul into the world, and March 9th, 2026, saw him slip away peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved him most. I remember when I was a little girl, utterly captivated by his stories of flying – not just the mechanics of it, but the sheer wonder of soaring through the sky. He’d build elaborate cardboard airplanes in the living room, meticulously detailing every wing and strut, and then spend hours explaining the principles of lift with a patience that only Alex possessed. He wasn’t a flashy man, never seeking the spotlight, but that passion for flight, for understanding how things worked, was just one facet of the brilliant, kind person he was. Alex’s life was, of course, marked by significant moments – his time in the Air Force, his crucial role in the Nixon administration, and, undeniably, his involvement in the Watergate investigation. But for me, and I suspect for so many who knew him, those were just chapters in a much larger, richer story. He was a deeply loyal friend, a devoted husband to his beloved Carol – who I’ll miss terribly – and the most wonderful, grounding father to his children and grandchildren. He had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen, to truly listen, and to offer a quiet, insightful piece of advice that always felt perfectly timed. He’d always say, “Just think about it,” and somehow, just by saying it, you’d find a little clarity. Beyond his professional life, Alex found immense joy in simple things: tending his garden, reading a good book (especially biographies!), and spending time with his family. He was a master storyteller, weaving tales of his adventures – both real and imagined – with a twinkle in his eye and a genuine warmth that drew people in. He had a remarkable impact on those around him, always willing to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or simply share a thoughtful conversation. He didn’t seek recognition, but his integrity and quiet strength left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. Alex leaves behind a legacy of kindness, intelligence, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world. He will be profoundly missed, but the memories of his gentle spirit and unwavering goodness will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to know and love him. Rest in peace, my dear Alex.
