Aloysius Pieris
January 1, 1935 - March 23, 2026 (Age 91)
It’s with a heavy heart, but also with immense gratitude, that we announce the passing of Aloysius Pieris, SJ, on March 23, 2026. Born on January 1, 1935, Aloysius lived a life of profound purpose and unwavering kindness, a life that touched so many of us deeply. I’ll always remember his infectious laugh – a warm, rumbling sound that could brighten even the cloudiest day. He had a way of making everyone feel seen and heard, truly listening with an open heart and a gentle spirit. He wasn’t one for grand gestures, but his quiet strength and thoughtful presence were gifts in themselves.
Aloysius dedicated his life to service, first as a Sri Lankan Jesuit priest and later as a passionate theologian. His work at the Tulana Research Centre, which he founded, was a testament to his belief in the power of dialogue and understanding between cultures and faiths. I remember countless conversations we’ve had, late into the night, exploring complex ideas and challenging assumptions – always with a deep respect for different perspectives. Beyond his intellectual pursuits, Aloysius found immense joy in learning about Buddhist philosophy and sharing his insights with others. He had a remarkable ability to connect seemingly disparate ideas, weaving together threads of wisdom from diverse traditions. He truly believed in the interconnectedness of all things, a belief that guided his life and work.
His love for his family was boundless. He was a devoted son, brother, and uncle, always offering a comforting word or a helping hand. He cherished his time with his nieces and nephews, sharing stories and wisdom passed down through generations. He instilled in us a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to making the world a more compassionate place. He wasn't afraid to challenge us to think critically and to embrace new ideas, but he always did so with love and encouragement. He taught us the importance of humility and the power of forgiveness.
Aloysius leaves behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity, compassionate service, and unwavering faith. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. His spirit of inquiry and his dedication to fostering understanding will continue to inspire us for years to come. We are so incredibly grateful for the time we had with him, and for the indelible mark he left on our hearts. May his memory be a blessing.
