André Bernard (pentathlete)|André Bernard
January 1, 1936 - April 20, 2026 (Age 90)
It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing André. Born on January 1st, 1936, he lived a life that was, quite simply, extraordinary – a life filled with fierce determination, quiet joy, and a deep, abiding love for everything he touched. Most people will remember him for his incredible achievement as an Olympic modern pentathlete in 1960, a feat that cemented his place in sporting history. But for those of us who knew him, André was so much more than a medal-winner; he was a wonderfully complex, endlessly engaging soul. I’ll always remember the time he tried to teach me to fence – a disastrous, hilarious affair involving a lot of tangled limbs and a very patient André, who never once lost his good humour. He had this incredible ability to find the funny in everything, even when things went spectacularly wrong.
André was the heart of our family. He adored his wife, Élise, and their children, Jean-Luc and Sophie, showering them with a love that was both steadfast and playful. He was a devoted grandfather, always ready with a silly face and a story, and his grandchildren knew they could always count on him for a game of cards or a rambling, slightly off-topic conversation. He cherished his siblings and parents, maintaining close ties throughout their lives, and his family was, without a doubt, his greatest source of happiness. Beyond family, André found solace and passion in the outdoors – he was a keen gardener, transforming his little patch of land into a vibrant explosion of colour and scent. He also loved to read, particularly historical novels, and could often be found lost in a book, a contented smile on his face.
What truly set André apart was his genuine kindness and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He had a remarkable empathy, always willing to lend an ear or offer a helping hand. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but his quiet acts of generosity – a thoughtful note, a shared cup of coffee, a word of encouragement – had a profound impact on those around him. He inspired us all to pursue our passions with dedication and to embrace life with an open heart. He taught us the value of perseverance, the importance of laughter, and the beauty of a simple, well-lived life.
André may be gone, but the warmth of his spirit, the echo of his laughter, and the countless memories he gifted us will remain with us always. He leaves behind a legacy of love, courage, and a life truly well-lived. We will miss you terribly, my dear André.
