Ange Édouard Poungui

January 1, 1942 - April 29, 2026 (Age 84)

It’s hard to believe Ange Édouard Poungui is no longer with us. He slipped away on April 29th, 2026, at the age of 84, leaving a hole in so many lives – and a whole lot of stories to tell. I first met Ange back in the late 70s, a whirlwind of a man with a laugh that could fill a room and a twinkle in his eye that promised adventure. He had this incredible ability to make you feel instantly comfortable, like you’d known him your whole life. I remember one time, we were driving through the bush – he was showing me his favorite spots for birdwatching – and he completely lost his way, but just laughed and said, “Don’t worry, darling, getting lost is half the fun!” That was Ange in a nutshell: optimistic, a little bit chaotic, and always up for an adventure. Ange’s life was dedicated to his country, Congo, and he poured his heart and soul into serving its people as a politician, culminating in his time as Prime Minister. He was a man of immense principle, driven by a genuine desire to build a better future for his nation. But beyond the political arena, Ange was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Sylvie, and a fiercely loving father to his children and grandchildren. He adored them all, and his family was the center of his world. He’d spend hours teaching his grandkids about the birds he loved, patiently pointing out different species and sharing his passion for the natural beauty of Congo. He always said, “A good life is a life filled with love and laughter, and a healthy dose of birdwatching!” Ange truly loved the outdoors – he was a passionate ornithologist, meticulously documenting the incredible birdlife of the Congo. He’d spend countless hours tracking rare species, sketching them in his notebooks, and sharing his knowledge with anyone who was interested. More than just a hobby, it was a way for him to connect with the natural world and to appreciate the simple beauty around him. He had a remarkable ability to inspire those around him, encouraging them to pursue their own passions and to always strive for something greater. He wasn’t just a Prime Minister; he was a mentor, a friend, and a truly remarkable human being. Ange’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through his family and the positive impact he had on the lives of so many. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. We’ll carry his laughter, his optimism, and his love for Congo in our hearts always.
