Anthony Mason (judge)|Sir Anthony Mason

January 1, 1926 - March 18, 2026 (Age 100)

Hi everyone, gathering here today to celebrate the extraordinary life of Sir Anthony Mason. He wasn't just a name in the history books; he was our Anthony, our beloved father, grandfather, and friend. He had this wonderful, dry wit that could light up a room, even when he was being very stern about the law. You could always tell when he was deep in thought – he'd tilt his head back and stare at the ceiling, lost in the intricacies of a case. He loved cricket with a passion, often reminiscing about matches and players with a twinkle in his eye. But his true love? It was the law, and his unwavering dedication to justice. He believed in fairness with every fibre of his being, and that passion shaped everything he did. He was the heart of our family. Mum, Margaret, was his rock for over 60 years, and they were inseparable. He was the proudest father and grandfather – his eyes would light up telling stories about his children and grandchildren. He took immense pride in their achievements, big and small. He wasn't just a judge; he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of immense wisdom for countless colleagues and students. His impact on the legal world was profound, but perhaps his greatest legacy is the people he touched, the lives he guided, and the principles he upheld with such quiet dignity. He leaves behind a world richer for his presence and a family overflowing with love and pride. So, while we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, integrity, and a whole lot of charm. He faced challenges with resilience and brought laughter even in difficult times. We'll miss his voice, his wisdom, and that unique Mason charm. He was, and always
