Antonio Becerra Gaytán
January 1, 1933 - May 12, 2026 (Age 93)
Antonio Becerra Gaytán walked into a room and the air seemed to warm. Born on a bright April morning in 1933, he spent his life turning ordinary moments into stories worth remembering. To his grandchildren he was “Abuelo,” the man who could turn a simple kitchen table into a stage, recounting how he once convinced a whole classroom of skeptical students that poetry could change the world. He’d pull out a worn copy of Neruda, read a line, then grin and say, “Now go out and make your own verse.” That mix of gentle humor and fierce conviction stayed with everyone who knew him.
As a teacher in Chihuahua from the late 1950s through the mid‑1970s, Antonio didn’t just hand out textbooks—he handed out curiosity. He’d organize impromptu field trips to the local market, turning the bustle of vendors into lessons on economics and culture. His students remember the way he’d pause, look out the window, and whisper, “Listen, the city is speaking.” When he moved into politics, that same listening ear guided him. He served as a deputy in the Chamber of Deputies from 1979 to 1982 and later in the Congress of Chihuahua, always championing the underdog. He helped found several parties—PCM, PSUM, PMS, PRD, and finally Morena—not for power, but because he believed each new coalition could bring a little more justice to the people he loved.
Family was his anchor. He and his wife, María, built a home where laughter echoed louder than any television. Sunday mornings meant fresh tortillas, strong coffee, and a chorus of grandchildren arguing over who got the last piece of pan dulce. Antonio would sit at the head of the table, eyes twinkling, making sure every voice was heard. He taught his kids to argue respectfully, to listen before speaking, and to never let a day pass without telling someone they mattered. Even in his final months, he’d call to ask about a grandchild’s school play or a neighbor’s new puppy, his concern as steady as the sunrise.
