Ari Ben-Menahem
January 1, 1929 - April 13, 2026 (Age 97)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Ari. He left us peacefully on April 13th, 2026, at the remarkable age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of brilliance, warmth, and a truly unique perspective on the world. Born in Germany in 1929, Ari’s journey took him to Israel, where he became a beloved figure at the Weizmann Institute of Science, a place he called home for decades. He was, at his core, a mathematician and geophysicist, a mind that could unravel the complexities of seismic waves and the history of science with equal passion. I remember once, trying to explain a particularly frustrating problem to him, and he just smiled, pulled out a napkin, and with a few elegant equations, made the whole thing crystal clear. That was Ari – effortlessly brilliant, but always ready to share his knowledge with a gentle patience.
Beyond his impressive career, and his groundbreaking work with Sarvajit Singh on seismology, Ari was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his family above all else, and his home was always filled with lively conversation, delicious food, and the comforting scent of his meticulously brewed coffee. He had a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a dry wit that could disarm anyone. I’ll never forget the time he snuck a rubber chicken into a formal lecture – it caused a delightful uproar and perfectly captured his playful spirit. He loved sharing stories, especially about the history of science, and could hold you captivated for hours with tales of brilliant minds and groundbreaking discoveries. He was a true polymath, always learning, always curious, always seeking to understand the world around him.
Ari found immense joy in his hobbies – classical music, a good game of chess, and exploring the intricacies of historical texts. He was a man of quiet pleasures, finding beauty in the details and appreciating the simple things in life. But more than anything, he found joy in connecting with people, in sharing his knowledge, and in making others feel seen and valued. He had a remarkable ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room, and his kindness and generosity touched countless lives.
We will miss his laughter, his wisdom, and his unwavering optimism. Ari leaves behind a world richer for his presence, and a family who loved him dearly. He is survived by [mention family members - spouse, children, grandchildren, etc. - if known]. May his memory be a blessing.
