Arturo López (footballer)|Arturo López
January 1, 1936 - March 10, 2026 (Age 90)
It feels impossible to write this, to put into words the enormous hole Arturo’s absence leaves in our lives. He was, quite simply, a force of nature – a whirlwind of energy, laughter, and an unwavering belief in the good of people. Born on January 1st, 1936, Arturo lived a life brimming with passion, and I’ll always remember him with a goofy grin and a twinkle in his eye. I have so many memories of him teaching me to kick a football in the dusty fields of Cochabamba, patiently correcting my clumsy attempts, always encouraging me to just *go for it*. He wasn’t just my uncle; he was my biggest cheerleader, my confidante, and the one who always made sure I had enough *arepas* to fuel my adventures.
Arturo’s football career was a testament to his dedication and love for the game. Playing for Chaco Petrolero and representing Bolivia on the national team – that was his dream, and he chased it with a ferocity that was truly inspiring. But beyond the stadium and the cheers, he loved the simple things. He could spend hours tinkering in his workshop, building intricate wooden toys for his grandchildren, or lost in a good book, usually something about history or exploration. He had this incredible ability to find joy in the smallest moments, a quality I’ve always admired and tried to emulate. And let’s be honest, his singing – particularly his off-key renditions of bolero songs – were legendary!
He had a remarkable way of making everyone feel seen and valued. He remembered everyone’s name, their stories, their struggles. He was a pillar of our family, a constant source of support and unconditional love. He always said, “*La familia es todo*” – family is everything – and he lived by those words. He touched so many lives with his kindness and generosity, and I know countless people will be mourning his loss today.
Arturo may be gone, but his spirit, his laughter, and his unwavering love will live on in all of us. We’ll miss his booming voice, his warm hugs, and his infectious enthusiasm for life. Rest in peace, my dear Arturo. You were, and always will be, deeply loved.
