Aziz Mekouar
January 1, 1951 - April 5, 2026 (Age 75)
If you only ever saw Aziz at an embassy reception, youād have noticed the impeccable posture and the quiet grace with which he navigated a crowded room. But those of us lucky enough to know him at home got the real treasure: the man whoād slip off his polished shoes the moment he crossed the threshold, hum old Moroccan melodies while boiling water, and insist on making the mint tea himself. He carried the trust of his nation across four continentsāfrom his early postings in Angola to Portugal, Italy, Washington, and finally Beijingābut he never let the title define him. In Washington, where he served longer than any Moroccan envoy before him, people didnāt just respect his diplomacy; they loved his patience, his dry wit, and the way he could effortlessly turn a stiff formal dinner into a warm gathering of friends.
To his family, he was never just āHis Excellency.ā He was our steady anchor, the grandfather whoād patiently help the little ones practice new languages, the husband who still remembered to leave a handwritten note on the counter before boarding a flight. No matter how many time zones separated us, Sunday evening calls were as sacred as any state function. He found his deepest joy in lifeās quiet rhythms: tending to his balcony garden, losing a delightfully competitive game of backgammon, and listening to old friends over strong coffee. He had a remarkable gift for finding beauty in transition, treating every new city not as an assignment, but as a home waiting to be loved. He truly believed that understanding a culture began with shared meals and genuine conversation, and he practiced that belief daily. Even when his calendar overflowed with multilateral summits, he always carved out hours to guide younger diplomats, gently reminding them that treaties are just paper without human connection.
Aziz leaves behind a world thatās a little more connected, a little kinder, and infinitely richer for his presence. His true legacy isnāt measured in diplomatic accords or official postings, but in the countless lives he touched through quiet generosity, the friendships he nurtured across every border, and the unwavering love he poured into his family. We will deeply miss his steady counsel, his easy laughter, and the remarkable way he made strangers feel like old friends. His memory will live on not only in the halls of diplomacy, but in our everyday moments of kindness and curiosity. Rest peacefully, Aziz. Your work here was beautiful, and weāll carry you forward in every cup of tea we pour, every story we tell, and every quiet act of grace you taught us to notice.
