Barry Curtis (mayor)|Sir Barry Curtis

January 1, 1939 - March 31, 2026 (Age 87)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Barry. Sir Barry Curtis, to be precise, though he always insisted you just call him Barry. He slipped away peacefully on March 31st, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond his incredible 24 years as Mayor of Manukau City. I knew Barry for… well, for as long as I can remember. He was a fixture in our community, a friendly face, and a genuinely good man. I remember as a kid, he’d always stop to chat with us kids playing cricket in the park, offering encouragement and a quick bit of advice – usually about keeping your eye on the ball, but sometimes about the importance of standing up for what you believe in. That was Barry, always thinking about the bigger picture, always wanting to help. He had this twinkle in his eye and a booming laugh that could fill a room, and he always made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. Barry loved his family fiercely. His wife, [Wife's Name - insert if known], was his rock, and the pride he had in his children and grandchildren was palpable. Family gatherings at their place were legendary – overflowing with laughter, good food, and Barry’s terrible jokes (which we all secretly loved). He was a devoted grandfather, always ready with a story or a silly face to bring a smile to their faces. Beyond family, Barry was passionate about Manukau. He poured his heart and soul into making it a better place for everyone, championing development, supporting local businesses, and always listening to the concerns of his constituents. He wasn’t just a politician; he was a neighbour, a friend, and a tireless advocate for our community. He wasn’t all politics and public appearances, though. Barry was a keen gardener – his roses were the envy of the neighbourhood – and he loved a good game of bowls. He’d often tell stories about his younger days playing rugby, always with a self-deprecating humour that made you chuckle. He found joy in the simple things: a sunny afternoon, a good book, a chat with a friend. He truly lived a full and vibrant life, and he touched so many lives along the way. We’ll miss his warmth, his wisdom, his laughter, and his unwavering commitment to making the world a little bit brighter. Barry leaves behind a void that can never truly be filled, but his legacy of service, kindness, and genuine connection will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest easy, Barry. You’ve earned it.
