It’s with hearts both heavy and full of gratitude that we say goodbye to Bernard Lafayette. To us, he wasn’t just the legendary activist whose name is etched in history books; he was Uncle Bernie, the man who could fix anything with a little patience and a kind word, who told the best stories with a slow, knowing smile, and whose handshake was firm and warm. We’ll miss the sound of his laugh, the way his eyes would crinkle at the corners when he was genuinely amused, and the profound peace that settled in a room when he entered. Bernie’s love for his family was his bedrock. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a grandfather who beamed with the purest joy. Our family gatherings were never complete without him quietly observing, then offering the perfect piece of advice or a hilarious, slightly mischievous anecdote from his younger days.
