Bernard Rands

January 1, 1934 - March 6, 2026 (Age 92)

Bernard Rands left this world on March 6, 2026, just two days after celebrating his 92nd birthday. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed peacefully in Chicago, surrounded by the music that defined his remarkable life and the family who adored him. Bernie's journey began in Sheffield, England, where his love for music and literature took root early. Those who knew him well remember his infectious enthusiasm for sharing stories - whether it was recounting his studies with musical giants like Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio, or describing the thrill of his first American residency. He had a gift for making everyone feel like they were part of his musical adventures, often pulling out his piano to play a few bars of whatever composition was currently captivating him. His move to America in 1975 marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with creativity and connection. Bernie found joy in the simple pleasures of life - a perfectly brewed cup of tea, tending to his garden, and most of all, gathering loved ones around his dining table for long, laughter-filled meals. His grandchildren remember him as the grandfather who would drop everything to listen to their latest piano piece or help with a school project, always with patience and encouragement. Bernie's music touched countless lives, but those closest to him knew that his greatest compositions were the relationships he nurtured. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, their three children, six grandchildren, and a global community of musicians and friends who were enriched by his mentorship and friendship. His legacy lives on not just in concert halls, but in the hearts of everyone who experienced his warmth, his wisdom, and his unwavering belief in the power of music to connect us all. The family invites friends to celebrate Bernie's life at a memorial concert featuring some of his favorite works, where we'll gather to remember a man who taught us all to listen more deeply - to music, to each other, and to the beautiful symphony of life itself.
