Bill Grayden

January 1, 1921 - April 29, 2026 (Age 105)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Bill. Though he reached the incredible age of 106, it still feels far too soon. Born Wilbur Ives on January 1st, 1921, he became the Bill we all knew and loved – a man of quiet strength, unwavering principle, and a surprisingly mischievous twinkle in his eye. I remember as a child, thinking he was the most important man in the world, not because he was a politician, but because of the way he’d always make time for a silly game or a story, even when he was clearly busy. He never talked *down* to us, just *with* us, treating every question, no matter how ridiculous, with genuine consideration. Bill’s life was one of service, starting with his bravery during the war and continuing through six decades in parliament – first in Canberra, then for the vast majority of his career, representing Western Australia. He wasn’t one for grandstanding or seeking the spotlight; he was a dedicated worker, a thoughtful listener, and someone who truly believed in making a difference for the people he represented. But politics wasn’t *all* of Bill. He found immense joy in his garden, coaxing the most beautiful roses out of the Western Australian soil. He was a keen reader, always with a book nearby, and he loved nothing more than a good debate, though he’d always listen intently to your point of view before offering his own. Family meant everything to Bill. He and his beloved wife, Margaret, built a life filled with love and laughter, and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was a constant presence in our lives, a source of wisdom, support, and unconditional love. He had a knack for knowing exactly when you needed a quiet word of encouragement or a firm but gentle nudge in the right direction. He wasn’t afraid to admit when he was wrong, and he always encouraged us to be our best selves, even when it meant challenging the status quo. Bill leaves behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, and kindness. He touched so many lives, not through headline-grabbing moments, but through countless small acts of generosity and genuine connection. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and the many people whose lives he quietly improved. We’ll remember his warm smile, his thoughtful nature, and the way he always made you feel like you mattered. Rest peacefully, Bill. You lived a truly remarkable life.
