Bill Ind
January 1, 1942 - April 25, 2026 (Age 84)
Bill Ind was a quietly remarkable man who lived his faith, his family, and his passions with a gentle, steady grace. Born on 26 March 1942, he entered the world at the dawn of a new era and grew into a man whose kindness and wisdom would touch everyone he met. From the first time I saw him at the church hall, where he was rearranging the hymnals with a smile, I knew he had a heart the size of a cathedral.
He served as Bishop of Truro from 1997 to 2008, but his influence never stopped at the pulpit. Bill was a mentor to countless young clergy, always ready with a listening ear and a practical piece of advice – “Remember, the church is a community, not a congregation.” He would often shuffle through his worn copy of the Book of Common Prayer, pausing to explain the subtleties of a verse to anyone who asked. One of my favorite memories was watching him lead a Sunday service, his voice rich and calm, as he spoke of hope and resilience, while behind the scenes he was quietly arranging a charity bake sale to help the local shelter. His love for his parish was matched only by his love for his family: a devoted husband to Ruth, a proud father to his three children, and a grandfather whose stories about the old days in Cornwall could turn even the most mundane afternoon into a lesson in history.
Bill’s passions extended far beyond the church. He was an avid gardener, tending to a small but vibrant plot of tomatoes and wildflowers that he claimed “brought more joy than any sermon.” He also had an unquenchable love for music – especially the simple joy of humming hymns while he fixed a broken radio or the thrill of watching the local choir rehearse. He could often be found at the community center, teaching a Sunday school class or coaching the youth football team, his laugh echoing through the hall as he celebrated every small victory with his players.
The impact Bill had on others is hard to quantify. He was a beacon of faith, a steady hand in times of crisis, and a source of laughter in ordinary moments. He taught us that faith is not just a belief but a way of living – through acts of kindness, through listening, and through the quiet support we give to one another. As we remember him, we hold onto his gentle spirit, his unwavering devotion, and the warmth he brought into our lives. Bill will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, faith, and community will continue to inspire us all.
