It’s with a heavy heart, yet overflowing with gratitude for a life so fully lived, that we announce the passing of William James Riley on March 29, 2026, at the age of 75. Bill was born on January 1, 1951, and left us far too soon, after a courageous battle with cancer. To say Bill loved hockey would be a monumental understatement; it was in his blood, his passion, his very being. From the moment he laced up his skates, Bill possessed a grace and skill that captivated everyone who watched him play. As the third Black player in the NHL and the first of African Nova Scotian descent to reach that level, he paved the way for countless others and did so with quiet dignity and unwavering determination. We remember watching him play for the Washington Capitals and the Winnipeg Jets, always giving his all, always with a smile. Beyond the ice, Bill was a devoted family man.
