Billy Knight (tennis)|Billy Knight

January 1, 1936 - April 17, 2026 (Age 90)

It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormous hole Billy’s absence leaves in our lives. Billy Knight, born January 1st, 1936, slipped away on April 17th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of sunshine, a wicked grin, and a whole lot of tennis balls. Most people will remember him as a talented British tennis player, a competitor who gave it his all on the court. But for those of us who knew him best, he was so much more – he was a force of nature, a wonderfully chaotic, endlessly optimistic soul. I’ll always remember the time he tried to teach me to serve, resulting in a spectacular volley that ricocheted off the neighbor’s shed and nearly took out Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning roses. He just laughed, a booming, joyful sound, and said, “That’s the spirit!” That was Billy – embracing the mess, finding the humor in everything. Growing up, Billy was the biggest, most enthusiastic presence in our family. He adored his wife, Margaret, and their three children, Emily, David, and Sarah, showering them with a love that was both fierce and gentle. He’d build elaborate Lego castles for the kids, patiently explain the rules of tennis (even if he occasionally forgot them himself!), and always, always had a silly joke or a ridiculous story to tell. He was the kind of dad who celebrated every small victory, from a good report card to a successfully built birdhouse. He and Margaret were a team, a partnership built on laughter, shared dreams, and an unwavering commitment to each other. Tennis wasn’t just a career for Billy; it was a passion. He loved the strategy, the challenge, the feeling of the sun on his face and the grass beneath his feet. But beyond the competition, he found joy in sharing that love with others, patiently teaching young players and encouraging them to chase their own dreams. He had a knack for making people feel comfortable, for boosting their confidence, and for reminding them that it’s not about winning, but about playing your best. He truly believed in the power of sport to bring people together. Billy’s impact on those around him was profound. He was a friend, a brother, a husband, a father, and a truly remarkable human being. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory and a community that will miss his infectious laughter and unwavering spirit. He may be gone, but the echoes of his joy will resonate in our hearts for years to come.
