Biren Sing Engti
January 1, 1945 - March 11, 2026 (Age 81)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Biren Dada. Born on January 1st, 1945, he filled nearly 82 years with a warmth and dedication that touched so many lives, and his passing on March 11th, 2026 leaves a hole in all our hearts. I remember as a child, being utterly captivated by his stories of Karbi Anglong – not the political side, though he loved serving his people, but the tales of the hills, the forests, and the vibrant culture he grew up with. He had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, always taking the time to listen, offer a kind word, or share a mischievous grin. He wasn’t just a politician; he was a storyteller, a friend, and a pillar of strength for our family.
Biren Dada’s commitment to Assam and its people was unwavering. His years as an MP, from 2004 to 2019, weren’t about power or prestige for him. It was about bringing a voice to those who often went unheard, fighting for their rights, and working tirelessly to improve their lives. But even with the demands of public service, family always came first. He adored his wife, and spoke of his children and grandchildren with such pride. Family gatherings were always filled with laughter, good food (he had a particular fondness for a spicy fish curry!), and his booming voice leading us all in song.
Beyond politics, Biren Dada found joy in the simple things. He was a passionate gardener, and his small plot was always bursting with colour. He loved a good game of chess, and was notoriously competitive! But mostly, he loved connecting with people. He’d spend hours chatting with neighbours, offering advice, or simply sharing a cup of tea. He had a knack for building bridges and fostering understanding, and that’s what truly set him apart. He believed in the power of community, and he lived that belief every single day.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering love. Biren Dada wasn’t just a name on a ballot; he was a good man, a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a true friend. We will miss his laughter, his wisdom, and his gentle spirit more than words can say. Though he’s gone, the impact he had on all of us will live on forever.
