Bobby Murray (musician)|Bobby Murray
January 1, 1954 - May 2, 2026 (Age 72)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Bobby Murray. Born on January 1st, 1954, Bobby lived a life overflowing with music, laughter, and a whole lot of heart. He wasn’t just a phenomenal blues guitarist – though he *was* that, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Detroit Blues Society and even contributing to three Grammy-winning recordings with legends like Etta James and B.B. King – he was a genuinely kind and generous soul. I remember visiting him backstage after a show with Etta, and instead of basking in the glow of the performance, he was immediately asking about *my* life, genuinely interested and offering a warm smile. That was Bobby. Always thinking of others.
Music wasn’t just his career, it was woven into the fabric of who he was. He could pick up any guitar and instantly tell a story, pouring his emotions into every note. Even with all his success touring and recording, some of his happiest moments were leading his own band in Metro Detroit, sharing his passion with local audiences. His last album, *Love Letters From…*, felt particularly special, a beautiful culmination of a lifetime spent crafting his sound. But beyond the stage, Bobby loved a good Detroit Tigers game, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, and spending time with his family. He absolutely adored his nieces and nephews, always ready with a silly joke or a guitar lesson.
He had this incredible ability to make everyone around him feel comfortable and valued. He mentored so many young musicians, always willing to share his knowledge and encourage their dreams. He wasn’t about ego or fame; he was about the music and the connection it created. He built a community around him, a family of friends and fellow musicians who loved him dearly. I can already hear the jam session happening in the next world, with Bobby leading the charge, a mischievous grin on his face.
Bobby left us on May 2nd, 2026, leaving a hole in our lives that can never truly be filled. But his music will live on, a testament to his talent and the joy he brought to so many. He was a true original, a beautiful spirit, and we were all so lucky to have known him. We’ll miss you terribly, Bobby. Rest easy, and keep playing that blues.
