Boubacar Ould Messaoud

January 1, 1946 - March 15, 2026 (Age 80)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Boubacar. Eighty years felt like nowhere near enough time with a man who held so much life, so much passion, and so much unwavering dedication in his heart. Born on January 1st, 1946, he always said starting the year with him meant a year of purpose – and he certainly lived that way. I remember visiting him in Nouakchott and being struck by how everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest elder, seemed to know him and greet him with a smile and a quiet respect. He wasn’t a man who sought the spotlight, but he commanded attention simply by *being* Boubacar – a gentle soul with an iron will. Boubacar’s life wasn’t about personal gain; it was about lifting others up. He saw injustice, specifically the continued practice of slavery in Mauritania even after its official abolition in 1981, and he couldn’t stand by. That’s why he founded SOS Esclaves in 1995. It wasn’t just an organization to him, it was a calling. He’d spend hours listening to stories, offering support, and tirelessly working to free those still trapped. He faced incredible challenges, and even threats, but his commitment never wavered. He always said, “Freedom isn’t given, it’s *taken* – and we must take it for everyone.” He was so proud of the work SOS Esclaves accomplished, and the lives changed, but he always insisted the fight wasn’t over. Beyond his activism, Boubacar was a wonderful family man. He adored his wife, and spoke of his children and grandchildren with such pride. He loved sharing stories, especially tales of Mauritanian folklore, and had a mischievous twinkle in his eye when recounting a particularly funny one. He found joy in simple things – a strong cup of tea, a good conversation, the sound of children laughing. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of consistent kindness and quiet strength. He taught us all the importance of empathy, of standing up for what’s right, and of never losing hope. The world feels a little dimmer without Boubacar’s light. He passed away peacefully on March 15th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of courage and compassion that will continue to inspire for generations to come. He touched so many lives, and though we mourn his loss deeply, we celebrate the extraordinary life he lived. He wasn’t just an activist; he was a father, a husband, a friend, and a true champion of human dignity. We will miss him terribly.
