Boubacar Ould Messaoud
January 1, 1946 - March 15, 2026 (Age 80)
It’s hard to believe Boubacar is truly gone. He left us on March 15th, at the ripe old age of 80, but his spirit – that fierce, unwavering spirit – feels more alive than ever. I met Boubacar nearly thirty years ago, and from the very first conversation, I was struck by his quiet intensity, his deep-seated belief in justice, and his absolutely terrible jokes. Seriously, his puns were legendary, and he’d deliver them with such earnestness that you couldn’t help but chuckle, even if they were spectacularly awful. He was a man of few words, but every word carried weight, every glance held a story. He was, quite simply, a force of nature wrapped in a gentle smile.
Boubacar’s life wasn’t about grand gestures or seeking the spotlight. It was about a quiet, relentless dedication to his country and its people. He poured his heart and soul into fighting against slavery in Mauritania, a battle that spanned decades and demanded incredible courage. It all started with SOS Esclaves in 1995, a testament to his unwavering commitment to eradicating this horrific practice, even after it was officially outlawed in 1981. He never sought recognition, never boasted about his work; he just kept showing up, day after day, advocating for those who couldn’t advocate for themselves. He was deeply loved by his family – his wife, Aïcha, and their children, who were the center of his world, and he beamed with pride whenever he spoke of them.
Beyond his activism, Boubacar was a man of simple pleasures. He loved tending his small garden, growing the most beautiful tomatoes, and he had a surprisingly encyclopedic knowledge of birds. He’d spend hours observing them, identifying them with meticulous detail, and sharing his observations with anyone who would listen. More than anything, though, he cherished connection – a good cup of tea, a shared story, a moment of genuine human connection. He had this incredible ability to make you feel seen, heard, and valued, and he touched so many lives with his kindness and empathy.
Boubacar’s legacy isn’t etched in monuments or headlines; it’s woven into the fabric of Mauritania, in the lives of those he helped, and in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a void that can never truly be filled, but also a powerful example of how one person, armed with compassion and unwavering determination, can truly change the world. We will miss you terribly, Boubacar.
