Carlos Westendorp

January 1, 1937 - March 30, 2026 (Age 89)

It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Carlos. He was, quite simply, a force of nature โ€“ a whirlwind of passionate opinions, twinkling eyes, and a laugh that could fill a room and chase away any gloom. Born on January 1st, 1937, Carlos lived a life brimming with purpose and, more importantly, with an incredible generosity of spirit. Iโ€™ll always remember the time he tried to teach me to salsa dance โ€“ a valiant effort that ended with both of us sprawled on the floor, laughing until our sides ached. That was Carlos โ€“ utterly committed to everything he did, whether it was navigating the complexities of international diplomacy or attempting to master a complicated dance step. He had this incredible ability to make you feel like the most important person in the world, and he did that for so many. Carlosโ€™s career was, of course, remarkable โ€“ a testament to his dedication and sharp intellect. From his time as Minister of Foreign Affairs to his crucial role in Bosnia, he dedicated himself to building bridges and fostering understanding in a world that often felt fractured. He carried the weight of those responsibilities with a quiet dignity, always striving to do what he believed was right. But beyond the headlines and the political maneuvering, he was a deeply loving husband to Elena and a devoted father to Sofia and Miguel. He adored them fiercely, and they, in turn, adored him. Family was everything to Carlos, and the warmth and laughter that filled his home were a reflection of the love he poured into it. He found joy in the simple things โ€“ a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, a spirited debate about history, the beauty of a sunset, and, of course, his beloved books. He could spend hours lost in a good novel, and he always had a fascinating story to tell, often laced with wry humor and a healthy dose of skepticism. More than anything, Carlos cared deeply about people. He had a knack for seeing the good in everyone and for offering a helping hand or a listening ear. He genuinely wanted to make the world a better place, and he did, one conversation, one decision, one act of kindness at a time. Carlos Westendorp may be gone, but the impact he had on all of us will endure. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of human connection. We will miss his laughter, his wisdom, and his extraordinary spirit more than words can say. Rest in peace, my dear Carlos.
