Catherine Saunders
January 1, 1943 - March 25, 2026 (Age 83)
Catherine Saunders was the kind of person who could light up a room with her laugh before she even walked through the door. Born in 1943, she grew up with a twinkle in her eye and a story on her lips—a combination that would serve her beautifully throughout her remarkable life. Whether she was charming audiences on "Beauty and the Beast," producing for the Mobil Song Quest, or working behind the scenes in public relations for the New Zealand Dairy Board, Catherine brought warmth, wit, and wisdom to everything she touched.
Family was everything to Catherine. She married her beloved Michael in 1965, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and the occasional (charming) disagreement about whose turn it was to make the tea. She was a devoted mother to Sarah and James, and later found immense joy in being "Nana Cat" to her six grandchildren. Those kids could do no wrong in her eyes, and she had a special way of making each one feel like they were her favorite—though we all know the truth: they all were.
Catherine's passions were as vibrant as her personality. She adored gardening, claiming that talking to her roses made them bloom brighter (and who were we to argue with the results?). She was also a keen baker, though her grandchildren would tell you that her pavlovas were more "rustic charm" than "MasterChef perfection"—and they loved every imperfect, delicious bite. Her greatest joy, though, was bringing people together. Whether hosting a dinner party or organizing a community fundraiser, Catherine had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued.
The world feels a little quieter without Catherine's voice in it, but her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched. She was a mentor, a friend, a cheerleader, and occasionally a gentle nudge when someone needed it. In her final years, she often said that the secret to a happy life was simple: "Love deeply, laugh often, and always have a good cup of tea nearby." Catherine Saunders did all three magnificently, and we are all better for having known her. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
