Charlie Williams (footballer, born 1944)|Charlie Williams

January 1, 1944 - May 4, 2026 (Age 82)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to our Charlie, our Chuckie, our beloved Charles Williams. He left us peacefully on May 4th, 2026, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of passion, laughter, and a whole lot of grit. Most folks will remember him for his incredible talent on the football pitch – a whirlwind of skill and determination that took him from Valletta FC in Malta to the Rochester Lancers, and earned him the honour of representing his country. I remember watching him play as a kid, mesmerized by his speed and the way he could seemingly float across the field. He wasn’t just playing a game; he was dancing with the ball, and you could see the pure joy radiating from him. Even after his professional days were over, he’d still be kicking a ball around with the grandkids, showing them a few tricks and sharing stories of his playing days. But Charlie was so much more than just a footballer. He was a devoted husband to his darling Mary, a love story that spanned decades and was built on unwavering support and endless teasing. He was a proud and loving father to Sarah and David, always there with a listening ear, a bit of advice (often unsolicited, but always well-meaning!), and a hearty laugh. Family was everything to Charlie. Sunday dinners at his house were legendary – the smell of his famous roast chicken would fill the air, and the table would be overflowing with laughter and love. He cherished his grandchildren, Liam and Emily, and delighted in spoiling them rotten with sweets and silly jokes. He had a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a knack for finding the humour in any situation. Beyond football and family, Charlie loved a good crossword puzzle, tending to his roses (he was incredibly proud of his prize-winning blooms!), and a quiet evening with a glass of wine and a classic movie. He was a man of simple pleasures, finding contentment in the everyday moments. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and comfortable, a genuine warmth that drew people to him. He touched so many lives with his kindness, his generosity, and his infectious enthusiasm for life. We’ll miss his booming laugh, his terrible jokes, and the way he always managed to make us smile. Charlie, you were a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a truly remarkable man. Rest easy, Chuckie. You’ll forever be in our hearts.
