Christian Schwarz-Schilling
January 1, 1931 - April 7, 2026 (Age 95)
It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Christian. He passed away peacefully on April 7th, 2026, at the age of 95, leaving a hole in our lives that will never quite be filled. I met Christian nearly sixty years ago, and from that first awkward encounter, I was utterly captivated by his sharp wit, his genuine curiosity, and that twinkle in his eye – a twinkle that always seemed to be hinting at a mischievous plan. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of quiet, thoughtful moments, and a deep, abiding kindness that he extended to everyone he met. I remember one time, we were stuck in a ridiculously slow traffic jam, and instead of getting frustrated, he pulled out a small notebook and started sketching the buildings around us, commenting on their architecture with such enthusiasm. That was Christian – always finding beauty and interest in the everyday.
Christian’s life was one of remarkable achievement, of course – a distinguished career in politics, culminating in his role as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, a position he undertook with a seriousness and dedication that truly reflected his belief in justice and the importance of rebuilding. But beyond the headlines and the political maneuvering, he was a devoted husband to my beloved wife, Elisabeth, and a wonderfully playful and protective father to his children, Anna, Michael, and Sophie. He adored his grandchildren, showering them with stories, silly faces, and an endless supply of encouragement. Elisabeth was his rock, his partner in everything, and their love was a constant, beautiful testament to a life built on mutual respect and affection. He always said she was the calm to his storm, and he wouldn’t have been half the man without her.
He had such a passion for innovation, particularly in the world of media and telecommunications – he truly believed in the power of connection and the potential of technology to bring people together. He was a voracious reader, a keen chess player (though he always claimed to be terrible!), and he could spend hours tinkering in his workshop, building little gadgets and contraptions. But more than anything, he loved to travel, exploring new cultures and meeting new people. He had this incredible ability to connect with anyone, to make them feel seen and valued. He genuinely cared about the world and the people in it, and he used his influence to advocate for positive change.
Christian’s legacy isn’t just in the policies he shaped or the positions he held; it’s in the countless lives he touched with his warmth, his humor, and his unwavering belief in the good in people. He taught us the importance of curiosity, of kindness, and of always, always looking for the joy in the moment. We will miss him terribly, but we will carry his spirit with us, always remembering the twinkle in his eye and the quiet strength of his heart.
