Claire Maurier
January 1, 1929 - May 5, 2026 (Age 97)
Claire Maurier—born Odette-Michelle-Suzanne, though to us she was simply Claire—laughed like a door thrown wide open to spring. I remember her kitchen in Paris, flour dusting her cuffs as she told stories between folds of pastry, turning an ordinary Tuesday into something glittering. She had this way of pausing mid-sentence, eyes bright, as if inviting you to catch the hush and make it yours. Even on set, she tucked little jokes into corners of scenes so the rest of us could find our light. She never rushed joy, and she never let a day go by without making someone feel chosen.
Family was her compass, and she loved with a stubborn, tender persistence. She showed up—for birthdays, for heartbreaks, for the small, unremarkable Tuesdays—bearing jars of fig jam and advice that tasted like warm bread. With her children and grandchildren, she was both anchor and sail, teaching them to dream in color while keeping roots deep in kindness. She and her partner built a home where conversation tumbled like good music, where forgiveness was practiced like a favorite hymn, and where love was less a word than a daily habit stitched into buttons, bandages, and bedtime stories.
Claire’s passions hummed quietly but fiercely: the theater’s hush, the clatter of typewriters, long walks that turned into maps of confessions, and cinema, which let her slip into other lives while remaining unmistakably herself. From La Cage aux Folles to Amélie, she gave audiences a France that winked back, brave and bruised and blooming. She collected people the way some collect shells, polishing each one with attention until they shone.
We will miss the particular lilt of her hello, but we carry her everywhere now—in braver choices, softer silences, and the way we learn, day by day, to love like Claire did, without reservation and with the lights on.
