Corky Withrow
January 1, 1938 - April 24, 2026 (Age 88)
Corky Withrow walked into a room like he was rounding third and spotting home: eager, bright, and ready to laugh. Born in 1937, he carried the quiet discipline of a ballplayer without ever making us feel like we were keeping score. I remember him turning a porch in St. Louis into a field of miracles, tossing a tennis ball so it arced like a promise, and telling me stories about ’63, when he slipped into a big-league uniform for the Cardinals and felt the hush before a swing. He loved that he got to wear the birds on the bat, but he loved more the way the game taught him to wait, to watch, to choose joy over noise.
Family was his favorite lineup, and he coached us all with patience and soft hands. He and his wife made a home that smelled like Sunday gravy and possibility, and he could turn a grandkid’s scraped knee into a lesson in courage with a wink and a goofy joke. He called us by silly nicknames and remembered the little things—how we took our coffee, which songs made us tap our shoes—and made us feel like MVPs just for trying. His love was steady, like a relay throw that finds the glove without ever showing off.
Corky’s passions stitched a bright map: he fished at dawn and swore the river told him secrets, gardened with the care he gave to a fresh leadoff hitter, and played harmonica on the back steps until stars leaned closer to listen. He believed in second chances, in small kindnesses, in showing up with dish towels and laughter when someone’s heart was bruised. He changed us by refusing to hurry, by proving that a person can be both strong and tender.
We will miss his long frame in the doorway and the way he made ordinary days feel like extra innings full of light. Corky, you rounded our hearts and slid us home with grace—thank you for the joy, and for loving us all the way.
