It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of David Rokni, born January 1, 1932, and peacefully departed this life on March 10, 2026. I have so many memories of him – his twinkling eyes, his ready smile, and the way he always made time for a kind word or a listening ear. He wasn't one for grand gestures, but his presence was always comforting, a gentle reassurance in a sometimes chaotic world. David’s life was dedicated to service and to upholding values of honor and integrity. His career as an Israeli reserve colonel speaks volumes about his commitment to his country. But for many of us, David will be most remembered for his decades as the commander of the annual Israel Independence Day torch lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl. He carried that responsibility with such grace and reverence, transforming a solemn event into a truly inspiring moment of unity and hope. It wasn’t just a job for David; it was a profound connection to his heritage and a way to connect with so many people.
