Deborah Dultzin
January 1, 1946 - April 2, 2026 (Age 80)
It’s with a heart full of both sorrow and immense gratitude that we share the news of Deborah Dultzin’s passing on April 2nd, 2026. Born on January 1st, 1946, Deborah left an indelible mark on the world, not just as a brilliant astrophysicist, but as a truly remarkable person who touched so many lives. I feel incredibly lucky to have called her a friend. I’ll always remember the sheer sparkle in her eyes when she talked about quasars and supermassive black holes – it wasn’t just a career, it was a passion that ignited her soul. She could explain complex concepts with such clarity and enthusiasm, making the vastness of the universe feel both awe-inspiring and somehow, a little bit more understandable. She dedicated her life to unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos, and her work at UNAM Institute of Astronomy was groundbreaking, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of scientists.
Deborah wasn’t just defined by her professional achievements, though. She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend – a woman who radiated warmth and kindness. She cherished her family above all else, and her home was always open for laughter, good food, and lively conversation. I have so many fond memories of late-night talks with her, fueled by coffee and a shared fascination with the universe. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a mischievous twinkle that could always bring a smile to your face. She was fiercely independent, incredibly intelligent, and possessed a quiet strength that was truly admirable. And despite her brilliance, she never let anyone feel intimidated – she had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Deborah found joy in the simple things: a beautiful sunset, a challenging crossword puzzle, and spending time with loved ones. She was an avid reader and always eager to learn something new. She possessed a rare gift for connecting with people from all walks of life, fostering friendships across cultures and disciplines. Her generosity extended far beyond her family and friends; she was a mentor to countless students, always willing to offer guidance and encouragement. She believed in the power of knowledge and its ability to illuminate the world.
Deborah’s absence leaves a void that can never truly be filled. But her spirit, her curiosity, and her unwavering belief in the beauty and wonder of the universe will live on in all of us who were fortunate enough to know her. She taught us to look up, to question everything, and to never stop exploring. We will miss her dearly, but we are so grateful for the time we had with her. May she rest in peace, knowing the impact she had on the world and the countless lives she touched.
