Depinder Singh

January 1, 1930 - April 30, 2026 (Age 96)

Lieutenant General Depinder Singh, PVSM, VSM, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, at the age of 96. He left behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and an unyielding spirit that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Born on January 1, 1930, he grew up in a modest family that instilled in him the values of hard work, humility, and devotion to duty. From a young age, Depinder was the sort of boy who could turn a simple stick into a sword in the backyard and the same stick into a kite in the evening sky, always dreaming of the day he would serve his country. His military career was the thread that wove his life together. Rising through the ranks with steadfast determination, he became the overall commander of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka from July 1987 to March 1990—a role that demanded not only strategic acumen but also compassion and diplomatic finesse. Before that, he served as the military assistant to the legendary Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, a partnership that forged a deep respect and lifelong friendship between the two men. Even in the most demanding moments, Depinder was known for his calm demeanor, his quick wit, and his ability to motivate those around him with a simple, “We can do this together.” His leadership was guided by a belief that true strength lies in unity and mutual respect. Beyond the uniform, Depinder was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He married his lifelong partner, Meera, in 1955, and they raised three children—Raj, Meera, and Anil—who often recall their father’s stories of the “war of the words” he would play with them during quiet evenings. He was a man who found joy in the simplest pleasures: a steaming cup of chai while watching the sunrise over the hills, a good book, or a quiet afternoon spent gardening. He loved music, especially traditional Punjabi folk tunes, and would often hum along as he tended to his roses, his laughter echoing through the yard. His grandchildren cherished the time he spent teaching them how to weave, the patience he showed, and the stories he told of the days when India was still young and full of hope. Depinder’s impact on others was immeasurable. Colleagues remember him as a mentor who took the time to listen, to guide, and to inspire. He was the first to offer a helping hand to a new recruit, the last to leave a camp when his men were still tired, and the voice of reason in heated debates. Friends speak of his generosity—whether it was donating a portion of his pension to local charities or offering his expertise to veterans’ causes. His warm heart, combined with an indomitable spirit, made him a pillar in every community he touched. As we say goodbye, we carry forward his legacy of service, love, and an unwavering belief that kindness can change the world. He will be dearly missed, but his memory will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
