Desmond Morris
January 1, 1928 - April 20, 2026 (Age 98)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Desmond. He left us peacefully on April 20th, 2026, at the grand old age of 98, leaving behind a world a little less colourful, a little less curious, and a whole lot less interesting. Most people knew him as the brilliant zoologist and author of *The Naked Ape*, and yes, he was incredibly clever – always questioning, always observing, always ready with a fascinating fact about animal behaviour that somehow connected to us humans. But to those of us who loved him, he was so much more. He was a whirlwind of eccentric energy, a twinkle in his eye, and a laugh that could fill a room. I remember once, he spent an entire afternoon trying to teach our cat, Winston, to play chess. Winston remained stubbornly uninterested, but Desmond was utterly captivated by the cat’s strategic napping positions! That was Desmond – finding wonder in the everyday, in the unexpected.
Family was everything to him. He adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, showering them with stories, silly jokes, and a genuine interest in their lives. He was a devoted partner to [Partner's Name - *Please insert partner's name here*], their love a constant source of warmth and laughter for so many years. He always said the best research you could do was observing the people you loved, and he certainly put that into practice. Beyond his professional achievements, Desmond found immense joy in his art. His surrealist paintings were a vibrant explosion of colour and imagination, a visual representation of the wonderfully complex world he saw around him. He’d often disappear into his studio for hours, emerging with a grin and a canvas bursting with fantastical creatures and dreamlike landscapes.
Desmond had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He wasn’t just a brilliant mind; he was a genuinely kind and generous soul. He inspired countless people to look at the world with fresh eyes, to question assumptions, and to appreciate the intricate beauty of the natural world. His television shows, like *Zoo Time*, brought the wonders of the animal kingdom into our living rooms, sparking a lifelong fascination with wildlife in generations of viewers. He made science accessible and engaging, and he never lost his childlike enthusiasm for discovery.
We’ll miss his quirky humour, his boundless curiosity, and his unwavering belief in the power of observation. The world has lost a truly unique individual, but his legacy – his books, his art, and the countless lives he touched – will continue to inspire and delight for years to come. Rest peacefully, Desmond. You were one of a kind.
