Dirk Kempthorne
January 1, 1952 - April 27, 2026 (Age 74)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Dirk. April 24th, 2026, feels impossibly final, even though we knew, with the colon cancer he battled so bravely, this day might come. He was 75 years young, and honestly, he packed more life into those years than most people do in a hundred. I keep picturing him back in his Boise mayor days, always with a twinkle in his eye and a genuine interest in what everyone had to say – from the business owners downtown to the kids playing in the parks. He remembered names, he remembered stories, and he truly *cared*. That’s what people always said about Dirk, that he just genuinely cared.
Dirk wasn’t just a politician, though he certainly excelled at that. He was a devoted husband to Patricia, and a proud father and grandfather. Family meant everything to him. I remember countless holidays at their home, filled with laughter, good food, and Dirk holding court with a story, usually one that somehow managed to be both self-deprecating and inspiring. He loved Idaho with a fierce passion, and that love extended to protecting its incredible landscapes. Whether he was serving as Governor or Secretary of the Interior, he was always a champion for conservation, for responsible stewardship of our natural resources. He found so much joy in the outdoors – fishing, hiking, just being *in* Idaho.
He had this incredible ability to connect with people, to make them feel heard and valued. It didn’t matter if you were a fellow Republican, a Democrat, or somewhere in between, Dirk treated everyone with respect. He wasn’t afraid to reach across the aisle, to find common ground, and to work towards solutions. That’s a rare quality these days, and it’s something we’ll all miss terribly. He left a real mark on Idaho, and on the country, but more importantly, he left a mark on all of us who were lucky enough to know him.
We’ll miss his booming laugh, his thoughtful advice, and his unwavering optimism. He faced challenges with grace and courage, and he always, *always* put others first. Dirk, you lived a full life, a meaningful life, and a life filled with love. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
