Doc Sauers

January 1, 1930 - April 29, 2026 (Age 96)

It is hard to imagine a world without the whistle, the clipboard, and that unmistakable, booming laugh that could fill an entire gymnasium. Our beloved Richard "Doc" Sauers passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that reached far beyond the hardwood of the basketball court. To the world, he was a legendary coach with 702 victories to his name, one of the winningest in NCAA history. But to those of us who knew him best, he was simply "Doc"โ€”the man who knew exactly when you needed a stern pep talk and when you just needed a quiet moment of encouragement. Doc spent forty-one years leading the Albany Great Danes, but his true coaching happened in the small moments between the games. He didn't just teach players how to run a fast break; he taught them how to be men of character, how to win with humility, and how to lose with grace. He had this uncanny ability to see the potential in someone before they even saw it in themselves. Whether you were a star player or a kid just passing through the gym, Doc treated you like you were the most important person in the room. He lived for the game, yes, but he lived even more for the people who played it. When he wasn't pacing the sidelines, Doc found his greatest joy in the simple things. He was a man of deep passions, whether he was diving into a good book, enjoying a quiet afternoon with his family, or sharing a meal with old friends. He cherished his family above all else, and his love for them was the steady heartbeat behind his long, demanding career. He showed us that you can be a giant in your profession while remaining a gentle, kind soul at home. Doc leaves behind a community that is better because he lived in it. He taught us that success isn't just about the scoreboard; itโ€™s about the lives you touch and the integrity you keep. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the incredible warmth he brought into our lives. We will miss his wisdom, his wit, and his unwavering belief in us. Rest easy, Doc. The game is over, and you played the most beautiful round imaginable.
