Donald Liao

January 1, 1930 - March 13, 2026 (Age 96)

Donald Liao left us far too soon, but the warmth of his spirit and the legacy of his good work will forever linger in the hearts of Hong Kong. We remember Donald not just as the formidable Secretary for Housing who masterminded the expansion of our public estates, but as a man whose quiet dedication and thoughtful design literally shaped the lives of generations. He wasn't one for grand speeches; he preferred to let the blueprints and the blooming gardens he loved do the talking. He approached every challenge, whether designing a new housing type or navigating district administration, with the same blend of practicality and gentle care, always striving to create communities where people could truly live. Family was the cornerstone of Donald’s world, and his love for them was a constant, radiant light. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a doting grandfather, always finding time for shared meals, laughter, and quiet moments together. His home was his sanctuary, filled with the comforting aroma of his wife’s cooking and the happy chaos of family gatherings. He instilled in his family the values of integrity, hard work, and deep compassion for others. Talking about his family, his face would light up with a pride so genuine it was impossible not to smile alongside him. Beyond his remarkable career, Donald found profound joy in the simple things. He had a true passion for gardening, nurturing plants with the same meticulous care he brought to his architectural plans. Pottering in his garden, coaxing life from the soil, brought him a peaceful contentment. He also cherished long walks, lively conversations over tea, and sharing stories of Hong Kong’s vibrant past. He touched countless lives not just through his official roles, but through his kindness, his ready smile, and his unwavering belief in building a better future for all. Hong Kong has lost one of its truest architects – of buildings, communities, and hearts. We miss him terribly.
