Doug Camilli
January 1, 1937 - March 21, 2026 (Age 89)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Doug Camilli. Born on January 1st, 1937, Doug lived a full 89 years, and while that feels like a long time, it never felt like enough when he was around. He wasn’t just a baseball player – though anyone who knew him knew how much he loved the game, and how proud he was of his time with the Dodgers and Senators. He was a storyteller, a jokester, and the most genuinely kind man you could ever hope to meet. I remember countless summer evenings spent listening to him recount stories from the dugout, always with a twinkle in his eye and a self-deprecating laugh. He could make even the most mundane event sound like an epic adventure.
Doug’s family was everything to him. He adored his wife, and they built a beautiful life together filled with love and laughter. He was a devoted father and grandfather, always showing up for games, recitals, and just…life. He had this incredible ability to make each grandchild feel like they were the most important person in the world. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of consistent, quiet support. A phone call just to check in, a handwritten note of encouragement, a perfectly timed silly joke – that was Doug. He taught us all the importance of hard work, humility, and always, *always* having a good sense of humor.
Beyond baseball, Doug found joy in the simple things. He loved a good book, tending to his garden (though he’d admit his thumb wasn’t always green!), and a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. He wasn’t one for the spotlight, but he had a knack for bringing people together. He volunteered at the local little league for years, patiently teaching young players the fundamentals of the game, but more importantly, instilling in them a love for it. He had a way of making everyone feel comfortable and valued.
Doug leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and a whole lot of love. He touched so many lives, and the world feels a little dimmer without his smile. We’ll miss his stories, his laughter, and just having him around. He passed away peacefully on March 21st, 2026, and while our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing he lived a life well-lived, a life filled with purpose and, most importantly, love.
