Hey there, friends. It’s with a heavy heart and so much love that I share the passing of our dear Doug. He left us on March 31st, 2026, after a full and vibrant life that touched so many. Doug was more than just a luthier; he was a creator, a dreamer, and a man whose hands shaped not just wood and strings, but also the very soul of music for countless people. You see, Doug’s life was built around his passion. He wasn’t just making guitars; he was building stories, one note at a time. His workshop wasn’t just a place to work; it was a sanctuary, filled with the scent of cedar and the hum of creativity. He poured his heart into every piece, especially those five magical guitars he crafted for Jerry Garcia – the Eagle, the Wolf, the Tiger, the Wolf Jr., and Rosebud. Those weren't just instruments; they were extensions of Jerry’s spirit, and Doug took immense pride in that connection. He loved the challenge of solving a new problem, the satisfaction of hearing a new instrument sing. But his greatest joy? Seeing the smile on a musician’s face when they held something he’d made, knowing it would carry their voice into the world. He built more than fifty other guitars and basses too, for legends like Pete Sears and Phil Lesh, each one a testament to his skill and dedication. Doug was also our rock, our anchor. He was the kindest, most generous soul you could ever hope to meet. He had this quiet strength and a wicked sense of humor that could light up a room.
