Eleanor Mae Johnson
December 25, 1928 - January 27, 2026 (Age 97)
Nashville, TN
Eleanor Mae Johnson, 97, a WWII veteran, retired nurse, and Tennessee treasure, passed away on January 27, 2026. Born on Christmas Day, she spent her entire life being a gift to others.
Eleanor served as a Navy nurse in the Pacific Theater during WWII, earning the Bronze Star for valor. After the war, she worked for 50 years at Vanderbilt Hospital, where her kindness was as legendary as her clinical skill.
A master quilter, Eleanor's handiwork adorns homes across three states. She taught countless people to quilt, insisting that "every stitch is a prayer, every quilt a hug that lasts forever."
Eleanor lived independently until her final week, tending her garden and baking biscuits for neighbors. She is survived by her daughter Patricia, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her final words were "What a beautiful life."
