Emil Paul Tscherrig
January 1, 1947 - May 13, 2026 (Age 79)
Emil Paul Tscherrig was, in every sense of the word, a man who dedicated his entire heart to something bigger than himself. Born on a cold winter morning in February 1947 in Switzerland, Emil grew up with the quiet strength of the Alpine valleys that raised him — steady, enduring, and breathtakingly beautiful in ways that weren't always obvious at first glance. He carried that Swiss warmth with him everywhere he went, whether he was navigating the bustling streets of Seoul, sharing a meal with families in Buenos Aires, or walking the ancient roads of Rome. And oh, how he loved to walk. He always said that the best conversations happened side by side, never sitting face to face. "People open up when they're moving," he'd say with that gentle smile of his, and he was right — so many of us opened up to Emil in ways we never expected.
To know Emil was to be changed by him. He had this remarkable gift of making every person he spoke to feel like they were the most important person in the room. During his years serving the Holy See — decades of quiet, tireless work across continents — he touched countless lives not with grand gestures, but with small, sacred moments. A handwritten note of encouragement. A phone call at just the right moment. The way he remembered everyone's name, every child, every struggle. He served as Nuncio in Korea, Argentina, and finally Italy and San Marino, but if you asked him, none of those titles mattered half as much as the people he met along the way. He was a shepherd in the truest sense — always looking for the one who wandered off the path, always ready to bring them back with kindness rather than judgment.
Emil's faith wasn't something he wore on his sleeve — it was something you felt in his presence. When Pope Francis made him a Cardinal in 2023, Emil laughed and told friends, "I didn't do anything to earn this. I just showed up
