Filaret Denysenko
January 1, 1929 - March 21, 2026 (Age 97)
Filaret Denysenko was a man of deep faith, unwavering conviction, and quiet strength who touched countless lives through his spiritual leadership and personal warmth. Born in 1929 in a small Ukrainian village, he grew up with a profound connection to his heritage and faith that would guide him throughout his remarkable 97 years. Those who knew him remember a gentle soul with twinkling eyes and a ready smile, always willing to share a story or offer words of wisdom over a cup of tea. His laugh was infectious—a deep, hearty sound that filled rooms and lifted spirits.
Family meant everything to Filaret. He was the devoted husband to his beloved wife of 62 years, a loving father to three children, and a doting grandfather to seven grandchildren who adored their "dedushka" (grandfather). Holiday gatherings at his home were legendary—filled with traditional Ukrainian dishes, folk songs, and the kind of laughter that comes from being surrounded by those you love most. Even in his later years, he never missed a chance to play chess with his grandchildren or teach them to bake his famous paska bread for Easter. His home was always open, his table always set for one more guest.
Beyond his family, Filaret's greatest joy came from serving his community and nurturing the Ukrainian Orthodox faith. As a hierarch and later patriarch, he dedicated his life to spiritual guidance, community building, and preserving Ukrainian cultural traditions. But those closest to him knew the man behind the title—the one who secretly paid for a struggling parishioner's heating bill, who spent hours visiting the elderly in hospitals, who could fix anything with his skilled hands. He found peace in his garden, where he grew the most beautiful tomatoes and shared them freely with neighbors. He loved Ukrainian literature, classical music, and could recite poetry for hours. Filaret Denysenko leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and kindness that will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 21, 2026, leaving this world a little brighter for having been in it.
