To those who knew him, Gary was so much more than the incredible drummer and voice behind hits with The Standells and The Walker Brothers. He was the guy who could silence a crowded room with a single, perfect drum fill, then have it roaring with laughter seconds later with a perfectly timed, dry observation. I’ll never forget the time on tour, after a particularly rowdy show, he sat on the edge of the stage, tuning his kit not by ear but by feel, humming the next song’s melody under his breath. That was Gary—a master of his craft who found the music in everything, from the rumble of a vintage engine to the sizzle of onions on a Sunday morning grill.
For Gary, family was the true north. His bond with his brother, Scott, was something to see—a lifetime of shared jokes, unspoken support, and that famous Walker sibling harmony that existed even when they weren’t singing. And to his devoted wife, he was her rock and her goofball, the man who’d surprise her with a single, perfect yellow rose just because.
