It is with hearts both heavy and full of gratitude that we say goodbye to our beloved George Plafker, who slipped away peacefully on April 2, 2026, at the age of 97. To us, he was Papa—a kind-eyed grandfather with a laugh that started in his belly and a handshake that told you everything you needed to know about a person: firm, honest, and warm. He was a devoted husband to his cherished Margaret for 65 years, a proud father to his children, and the anchor for a sprawling family that grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he treated with the same gentle, unwavering interest. He’d ask about your day, your project, your tiny worry, and you always left feeling seen.
Many knew George as a giant in his field, the American seismologist whose quiet, meticulous work helped rewrite our understanding of the Earth. But to hear him tell it, he was just a curious man who loved maps and rocks, especially the dramatic, frozen landscape of Alaska. We’ll never forget the story he’d tell, eyes lighting up, about the 1964 earthquake. While others saw only catastrophe, George saw a puzzle. He tramped through the shattered coastline, measuring displaced beaches and twisted trees, his mind connecting dots that others missed.
