He was a devoted husband to his cherished Margaret for 65 years, a proud father to his children, and the anchor for a sprawling family that grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he treated with the same gentle, unwavering interest. Many knew George as a giant in his field, the American seismologist whose quiet, meticulous work helped rewrite our understanding of the Earth.
