Gerard Williams (American football)|Gerard Williams
January 1, 1953 - April 4, 2026 (Age 73)
To know Gerard was to be loved fiercely and protected completely. Long before the stadiums knew his name, he was just a boy from Langston with a quick smile, an easygoing laugh, and a heart that simply refused to keep score. He had this wonderful habit of leaning in when you spoke, listening like your story was the only one in the room, and making everyone around him feel exactly where they belonged. He carried himself with a quiet confidence you only get from learning to read a field—whether it was grass under stadium lights or the unspoken rhythms of everyday life. He never chased the spotlight, but my goodness, he knew exactly how to light up a porch, a kitchen table, or a quiet Sunday morning.
Football was his first great love, and he poured his whole self into it. From his proud days as a Langston Lion to suiting up for the Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Cardinals, and those unforgettable WFL seasons with the Birmingham Americans and Vulcans, Gerard played with relentless grace. But what he truly cherished wasn't the roar of the crowd—it was the brotherhood. After the final whistle, he traded cleats for garden gloves, finding that same steady satisfaction in tending his backyard tomatoes, tinkering with classic trucks, and teaching neighborhood kids how to read a quarterback's eyes. He was the anchor of our family, the patient husband whose devotion never wavered, and the grandfather who always had a spare football and a pocket full of peppermints. He loved loudly, forgave quickly, and always made sure there was room at the table for one more.
Gerard's legacy won't be measured in yards or tackles, but in the way he showed up, day after ordinary day, with a steady shoulder and a joke that could melt the heaviest tension. He taught us that real strength isn't about how fast you run, but how gently you walk beside someone who's struggling. We'll miss his booming laugh echoing down the hall, his stubborn loyalty, and the way he made a simple weekday dinner feel like a celebration. Though he left the field for the last time this April, his spirit lives on in every open door we leave unlocked, every shared story, and every choice to love a little more fiercely. Rest easy, our beloved Gerard. You played a beautiful game, and we'll spend the rest of our lives trying to match the grace you showed us.
