Heorhij Halenčanka
January 1, 1937 - March 11, 2026 (Age 89)
It is with hearts both heavy and grateful that we say goodbye to Heorhij Halenčanka, a man who carried the weight of centuries with a gentle smile and a twinkle in his eye. To us, he was simply Heorhij—a father, a grandfather, a husband to his beloved Valentina for over sixty years. I’ll never forget the quiet magic of his study, the scent of old paper and leather binding hanging in the air as he’d carefully unfurl a fragile, centuries-old map for us. He’d trace the faded ink with a reverent finger, not just pointing to a town or river, but spinning stories of the people who lived there, their struggles and their simple joys. He taught us that history wasn’t about dead dates in a book, but about the living breath of those who came before us.
Heorhij’s world was built on a foundation of unwavering family love. Our home was his sanctuary, filled with the laughter of his children and grandchildren. He was the anchor, the patient listener, the man who could fix a toy with the same meticulous care he used to restore a medieval manuscript. Sunday dinners were a ritual, where his stories from academia would mingle with gentle teasing and the clink of plates. His passion wasn’t confined to archives; it bloomed in his small garden, where he’d grow tomatoes with the same dedication he applied to his research, proudly presenting the first ripe one each summer as if it were a discovered artifact
