Hjálmar H. Ragnarsson

January 1, 1953 - March 15, 2026 (Age 73)

Hjálmar H. Ragnarsson left this world on March 15, 2026, surrounded by the music he loved so dearly and the family who loved him even more. Born on January 1, 1953, Hjálmar lived a life that was as rich and complex as the compositions he created. He had a way of making everyone feel like they were part of something beautiful, whether through his music, his teaching, or simply his presence at the dinner table. Those who knew Hjálmar understood that his passion for music was matched only by his passion for people. He could spend hours talking about the perfect harmony or the importance of arts education, his eyes lighting up with that familiar enthusiasm that made you want to listen forever. But he was equally content sitting in silence with a cup of coffee, watching the sunrise, or playing with his grandchildren. His laugh was infectious, his hugs were legendary, and his ability to remember everyone's birthday was nothing short of remarkable. As a composer, Hjálmar created works that touched countless hearts, but it was his role as a husband, father, and friend that truly defined him. He met his beloved wife Sigrún at a music festival in Reykjavik, and they spent the next 48 years creating their own beautiful symphony together. Their home was always filled with music, laughter, and the wonderful chaos of family gatherings where Hjálmar would inevitably end up playing the piano while someone else tried to sing along, usually off-key but always with joy. Hjálmar's legacy lives on through his three children, seven grandchildren, and the countless students he inspired throughout his career. He believed that music had the power to heal, to connect, and to transform, and he dedicated his life to sharing that belief with others. Whether he was composing a new piece, leading a university, or simply sitting with someone who needed a friend, Hjálmar approached everything with the same generous heart and brilliant mind that made him so special. Though we will miss his physical presence terribly, we find comfort knowing that Hjálmar's music continues to play on, in concert halls, in classrooms, and most importantly, in our hearts. The world was a better place with him in it, and we are all better people for having known him. As he would say, "The final note isn't an ending—it's the beginning of the music living on in others." And oh, how beautifully his music lives on.
