Following his taking of power, he and other officials from the interim military administration declared Isaac Zida to be the interim Head of State until power could be handed over to a civilian government that would oversee elections. A few weeks later, a civilian, Michel Kafando, was chosen to replace Zida as transitional head of state. Prior to the uprising, Traoré served as Compaoré's aide de camp.
