Jack Bass
January 1, 1935 - April 25, 2026 (Age 91)
Jack is gone, but the room still feels like it’s laughing. I keep expecting to hear that low, rumbling chuckle of his, the one that started as a snicker and built into a full, joyful belly laugh. He was born on June 24, 1934, and lived a life that was equal parts curiosity and kindness. He could walk into a crowded room and find the quietest person, ask them one thoughtful question, and have them walking away feeling like they’d just told their best story. As a journalist for The Charlotte Observer, he didn’t just chase headlines; he chased the truth behind them, with a notebook and a gentle persistence that made people want to open up.
His family was his whole world. He was the grandfather who would patiently assemble the most complicated toy, the uncle who showed up with a thermos of coffee and a listening ear, and the partner who adored his wife with a steady, unwavering devotion. Our kitchen table was sacred ground for us, especially on Sunday mornings, filled with the smell of coffee and the sound of him recounting the week’s adventures, from the smallest human kindness he’d witnessed to the most absurd news item he’d uncovered.
Jack’s pen was his passport, but his true joys were the simple things: a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, a well-worn paperback, and long walks around the lake, where he’d point out a heron or a strange cloud and marvel at the quiet beauty of it all. He read constantly and believed fiercely in the power of a good story to change a heart. He taught us to pay attention, to listen closely, and to find the humor even in the hard moments.
We’ll miss his presence terribly, the way he made the ordinary feel extraordinary. But his legacy isn’t in the articles he wrote, though they were brilliant; it’s in the way he made people feel seen and valued. He leaves behind a world that’s a little less wise and a lot less warm. We’ll carry his curiosity, his compassion, and that infectious laugh with us every day. You were a wonderful storyteller, Jack, and we’ll keep telling your story, exactly as you lived it.
