Our hearts areshattered today with the passing of our beloved Jahanara Arzu, who left this world peacefully on March 4th, 2026, just a few weeks after celebrating her 93rd birthday on November 17th, 1933. She was a force of nature, a gentle giant whose spirit filled every room she entered. Born in a time of great change, she carved her own path with grace and unwavering conviction.
Jahanara wasn't just a poet; she was a weaver of words and a nurturer of dreams. Her love for Bengali literature was profound, and her dedication to elevating women's voices through the founding of Sultana, the first women's weekly from East Bengal in 1949, remains a towering achievement. She poured her soul into her poetry, finding solace and joy in the quiet moments of creation, often surrounded by the scent of her beloved garden. She had a laugh that could light up the darkest room, a warmth that made everyone feel instantly welcome, and a quiet strength that inspired us all. She was our anchor, our confidante, and our greatest cheerleader.
She was a wife, a mother, and a grandmother whose love knew no bounds. To her sons, Justice Ashfaqul Islam and Professor Minara Zahan, she was their unwavering foundation, her pride evident in every word. She cherished her family fiercely, finding immense joy in their successes and offering boundless support through every challenge.
