James Lawrence King
January 1, 1928 - May 3, 2026 (Age 98)
It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing James Lawrence King. Dad, or simply “King” as we all knew him, slipped away on May 2nd, 2026, after a life brimming with quiet dignity, sharp wit, and a surprising amount of mischief. Born on January 1st, 1928, he was a force of nature disguised as a gentle soul. I remember as a little girl, utterly fascinated by the serious men in his courtroom, completely oblivious to the fact that one of them was my dad. He always had this twinkle in his eye, a secret amusement at the chaos of family life, and a genuine warmth that drew everyone in. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of small, consistent acts of kindness – a perfectly timed joke, a listening ear, a steady hand.
Dad’s career as a judge was, of course, incredibly important to him, a testament to his dedication and intellect. He served with distinction for over fifty years, becoming Chief Judge in 1984, a role he approached with the same thoughtful consideration he brought to everything. But beyond the courtroom, that’s where he truly shone. He was a passionate birdwatcher, spending countless hours patiently observing the intricate lives of cardinals and blue jays in our backyard. He could identify any bird by its song, and he’d happily share his knowledge with anyone who showed even a flicker of interest. And let’s not forget his legendary tomato garden – a source of immense pride and, occasionally, a slightly competitive spirit amongst the family.
He was the heart of our family, a constant, reassuring presence. Mom, of course, was his rock, and their love story was a beautiful, enduring one. He was a devoted grandfather to Emily and David, always ready with a silly face and a story, and a beloved brother, uncle, and friend. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, to truly *listen* when you spoke. He didn’t seek the spotlight, but he left an indelible mark on everyone he met, instilling in us a sense of fairness, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life.
We’ll miss his quiet strength, his dry humor, and the way he made us all feel just a little bit better about the world. Dad, you were a remarkable man, and your legacy of kindness and wisdom will live on in all of us. Rest in peace.
